Earth Day at Rumiano Cheese Co.
Productivity, Efficiency, and Sustainability
We pride ourselves on being as sustainable as possible. Over the decades, Rumiano Cheese Company has adapted and progressed in productivity, efficiency and most importantly sustainability. From heat exchangers that cool warm milk with cold milk, to the state of the art waste water plant that recycles ~20,000 gallons of water per day, Rumiano Cheese has looked for sustainable and efficient practices for over 90 years.
While the plant in Crescent City has been optimizing productivity with the newly introduced whey protein concentrate plant and wastewater plant, Willows has been doing it's fair share as well. It's no mystery that manufacturers use a LOT of cardboard.
We are no exception, but thanks to our cardboard compactors there are no wasted boxes. Every month we ship a whole truckload of cardboard bales (about 700-1,100lbs each) to a plant that recycles and reuses the old cardboard. Not only is cardboard recycled, but 95% of our trash is recycled as well.
All of our trucks are regularly maintained to keep carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions very low while driving the 1,000+/- miles per day. By law, our trucks are required to be California Air Resource Board (CARB) approved as well.
We're going to keep making the best cheese possible while continually finding advancements that allow more sustainable practices in the future. Happy Earth Day to all and remember, everyday is Earth Day!
