California's Prop 37 - Labeling GMOs

Educate yourself on the upcoming measure that will require the labeling of GMO foods

California's Prop 37 - Labeling GMOs

Over the last month, there has been an appropriately abundant amount of Non-GMO related content on the Internet because October is Non-GMO Month. This year in California, Non-GMO Month couldn't have come at a better time. On the November ballot is Prop 37, California's Non-GMO related proposition requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods. There is plenty of information available to confuse and even mislead the voters out there. We won't tell you how to vote -- because we don't like being told what to do either -- but we will give you the tools you need to make an educated decision that fits what's best for you and your family.

On the ballot, Proposition 37 is described as:

"Requires labeling of food sold to consumers made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways. Prohibits marketing such food, or other processed food, as 'natural.' Provides exemptions."

Wedge in the Round Blog Review of Rumiano Organic Cheese

"I've not found plain Dry Jack particularly interesting, especially in our modern age when true Italian hard cheese is readily accessible, but Rumiano's smoked version brings qualities of bacon, cured meats, nuts and butter, albeit with subtlety, that might help it earn an occasional spot on your cheese board."

Future-of-Food

Watch:

The Future of Food
-- One of the best ways to learn about GMO's is by watching documentary films. One that we highly recommend is The Future of Food. The film was originally released in 2004 and it is still shown around the world. It has been instrumental in the Non-GMO movement.

In addition to The Future of Food, we encourage you to check out the list we have created on our Resources page and share them with your friends and family.

seeds-of-deception

Seeds of Deception -- This book is written by internationally recognized best selling author Jeffrey Smith who has also become the spokesperson for the Non-GMO movement. In his first book, Seeds of Deception, Smith discusses the role politics has played in the GMO movement as well as the health implications on society. He has written additional books on this topic which you can find listed on our Resource Page along with other authors on the topic.

Non-GMO Month is Here!

Written by Owen Rumiano, Posted in Non-GMO

Are you curious about GMOs in your food? Try living the Non-GMO lifestyle for Non-GMO Month

Non-GMO Month is Here!

It's October, and that means it's Non-GMO Month! The air is thick with the smell of falling leaves and, you guessed it, election time. One proposition that is getting a lot of attention this year is California's Prop 37 which proposes the labeling of any and all genetically modified food retail products. As the world's first Non-GMO Verified Cheese we are participating in Non-GMO Month with a blog series about Non-GMO's and will be sharing with you ideas on how you can participate.

What are GMO's?

non-gmoGMOs are "genetically modified organisms". Organisms that have been genetically altered through gene splicing. This technique is also known as "genetic engineering" or GE. DNA from different species are merged, creating combinations that do not naturally occur in nature. GMOs are engineered with the intention of creating plants that are tolerant to drought, disease and pesticides which in turn will create higher yields. It has not yet been proven that the production of GMO's are meeting these goals, however more and more evidence is leading to the conclusion that GMO's are creating health problems in humans and livestock and contributing to environmental damage.

For example, a genetically engineered tomato now has the ability to grow in cold weather using antifreeze genes found in the winter flounder and is refered to as the "fish tomato."
